| The Four-Way Test
In everything that we
think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all
concerned?
Will
it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
Will
it be BENEFICIAL to all
concerned?

Don Mueller:
Autism & The Marcus Autism
Center
Linda Morris introduced
the speaker, Don Mueller.
Don Muelleris the President of The
Marcus Autism Center. He speech focused on autism
and how The Marcus Autism Center helps those and
their families affected by autism.
The
center was started in 1991 by Bernie Marcus to
help an employee with their autistic child. It is
a non-profit that relies on community and
corporate support.
The
Marcus Autism Center works with kids up to the age
of 21 years. Autism is an inability to
communicate. 1 out of every 98 children born in
Georgia will have autism. Early diagnosis is the
key to autism. It is a very unknown disease.
We are not certain what causes autism, but in 10
to 15 percent of all cases, the cause is a genetic
issue.
Approximately 4,000 kids per year are
treated at the Marcus Autism Center. There is a
year long wait to be seen at The Marcus Autism
Center. At The Marcus Autism Center, they teach
eating habits, communication, and attempt to
prepare the child for transition into
adulthood.
The
Marcus Center formed a partnership with Children's
Healthcare of Atlanta in 2008. Autism is not a
covered medical benefit in Georgia. However, 22
States have Autism as a covered benefit.
The book, The
American Presidents, was donated to the DeKalb
Public Library on behalf of Past President
Bryan Downs.
The
book, The Everyday Advocate, Standing Up for Your
Child with Autism, was donated on behalf of our
speaker Don
Mueller.
The meeting was then
adjourned.
