Southeast.
Greg

Gregs'
expertise lies in the area of promoting energy
efficiency. Recently, the DecaturWise
program was initiated in Decatur in order to
promote energy efficiency and take advantage of
Federal dollars available through the recent
Reinvestment Act.
Electrical
use is expected to increase by 27% by 2030.
53% of our electrical energy comes from coal and
24% from nuclear. Of the total energy
expended in the United States, 36% is related to
buildings with 65% of all electrical energy being
expended by buildings. Residential homes
account for 37% of all the energy expended in the
United States.
Georgia
Power and other providers are interested in energy
efficiency in order to delay expensive additions
to the power grid that are necessitated by peak
usage times. Georgia Power will provide up
to $2200 in rebates if a home can prove
significant savings from a retrofit and
DecaturWise will add an additional $1000 rebate if
there is at least a 15% improvement.
DecaturWise has been online for five weeks thus
far; eight projects are already in processs and
another twenty are in the works.
Energy
efficiency at home can be greatly impacted by a
whole home assessment. The investment in a
comprehensive energy audit of a home's systems can
result in dramatic savings over time.
Typical projects include work on improving the
building envelope, improving efficiencies of the
HVAC system, and insulation improvements. How to
begin? Go to the DecaturWise website for
information on certified contractors who can
provide residential energy audits at a reasonable
cost.
