| The Four-Way Test:
In everything that we
think, say or
do:
Is it
the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all
concerned?
Will it build
GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
Will
it be BENEFICIAL to all
concerned?

 President C.J. called the meeting
to order Annoucements:
President
CJ made the following
announcements:
Sara
Fountain noted that information for
applying for the upcoming Leadership DeKalb class
was available on the tables. Sara added that
here were three open house opportunities for
potential applicants to attend to get to know more
about the program.
Clark Candler
reminded everyone that the next social event would
be on the Second Thursday, February 10th.
There will be a reception with beverages and heavy
appetizers beginning at 5:30pm and a program with
Chris DuPree from 6:30pm -
7:10pm. To help cover costs, $10 per person
will be added to each attendee's bill.

this would be a great time to socialize and have
some fun with fellow Club members.

Linda
Morris introduced our speaker,
Donna Hyland who serves as
President and CEO of Children's Health Care of
Atlanta, an organization that resulted from the
merger of the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital
and Egelston Hospital in 1998. Ms. Hyland
added that in addition to the two original
partners, Hughes Spaulding merged in 2006 and the
Marcus Autism Center merged on 2008.
Ms.
Hyland added that while Children's Health Care of
Atlanta served metro-Atlanta, it also served
patients throughout the State of Georgia. It
is also the teaching hospital for Emory University
and Morehouse School of Medicine. It has
also been names one of the Fortune 100 best places
to work for the past six years.
Ms.
Hyland stated that pediatric cancer has an overall
cure rate of 75% which is a significant increase
over the 20% cure rate from the 60's.
Interestingly, chemo treatment for girls is 2.5
years while it is 3.5years for boys. Ms.
Hyland attributed the increase in cure rates to
the collaboration between doctors, researchers and
patients who were competing against cancer
together instead of competing against each other.
Ms.
Hyland noted that collaboration was a key piece of
improving pediatric health care and that just
recently two doctors and a Georgia Tech researcher
had been awarded the Eureka Award from the
National Cancer institute for development a
process and surgical instruments to address brain
cell cancer.

On behalf
of our speaker, the book " How Your Child
Heals: An Inside Look at Common Childhood
Ailments" by Christopher M. Johnson was
donated to the DeKalb County Library
System.
The
meeting was then adjourned.
