| The Four-Way Test:
In everything that we
think, say or
do:
Is it
the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all
concerned?
Will it build
GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
Will
it be BENEFICIAL to all
concerned?

Jim Philips & Scott
Thompson:
Rotary
International
Jason Conn
introduced the program
on
the works of the Decatur Rotary Foundation and the
Rotary International Foundation (also known as the
Paul Harris
Fund).
Jason
reminded club members that the Decatur Rotary
Foundation was a 501(c)(3) that the Club used to
fund our service projects as well as grants to
service organizations. Jason urged members
to consider the Decatur Rotary Foundation as part
of their charitable giving
plan.
Jim Philips
spoke about Rotary International's work with
eradicating polio through the Polio Plus outreach
effort. Jim showed a video that highlighted polio
inoculation efforts in Uttar Pradesh, India.
In addition to Past District Governor Robert Hall,
the video starred Jim and Donna Philips during
their trip to India.
Jim reported that in 2010
there have been 117 cases of polio reported from
four countries - Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and
Pakistan. That compares to the 1,000 cases a day
that were reported in 1988 when Rotary started the
Polio Plus campaign. Jim also recognized the
financial support given to polio eradication by
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, including a
current $200 million dollar challenge grant
that Rotary will soon have fully
funded.
Scott Thompson spoke
about the Club's local efforts with the MLK
Service day Project. Scott pointed out that the
Decatur Rotary Club had long supported the MLK
Service Day project both financially and with our
labor. He noted that the project helped
Decatur seniors remain in their homes by providing
much needed maintenance and repairs. Scott
said he had been particularly inspired to work on
this local project after hearing a program with
the Boy Scouts where the speaker had urged people
to "spend your time where you spend your money and
spend your money where you spend your time."
President CJ commented
that she and her family annually participated in
the MLK Service Day project and it really served
to make the local connection to Decatur
Rotary.
President CJ and Jason then provided the
following recognition for club members who had
made contributions to Rotary
International.
