President Dave Jollay shares his enthusiastic plans for this 2006-7 Decatur Rotary year:
The Decatur Rotary Club has embarked upon an exciting Rotary Year in 2006-2007. As we enjoy our 69th year of Rotary in Decatur, we are supported by the strength of our history, past leadership, and strong membership base in the community. It is the connective link of 1600 clubs focused in their local communities in 167 countries around the world and being able to leverage their combined strength to address humanitarians’ needs from local levels to worldwide which make Rotary the premium service organization in the world. Many things have changed within Rotary since it’s founding in 1905 but one thing that has not is the continued focus on the strength and fellowship of an individual club thru the recognition and importance of each member’s contribution. The Decatur Rotary Club’s membership is a reflection of the leadership in the business, civic, and governmental area of the vibrant community of Decatur. While we value and respect the history and leadership of our past members we are a Club that is looking forward to being involved with the continued growth of our city and region, and to continue to identify new areas of service where we can make a difference in the community thru our efforts. Our members come together every Friday for lunch at the Historical Dekalb Courthouse Building and enjoy fellowship with each other alongside programs which keep us informed from leaders in all disciplines. I believe that is one of the most appreciated aspects of our meeting, to take a brief period of time out of your week to connect with other leaders in the community and to be educated or entertained on a topic of interest to all of us. The development of these relationships strengthens and improves each of us in our work relationships and our business. The type of person who is a candidate for Rotary is usually someone who has already achieved a measure of recognition and success in their respective area of the community and has a calendar which is nearly full. The reason they are willing to make room for a Rotary commitment is the realization that they want to belong to an organization which is giving back to the community, values their time, and money commitment and fulfills an opportunity for them to grow and contribute in that capacity. Our International theme this year is “Lead the Way”, from our International Rotary President Bill Boyd of New Zealand. I believe Decatur Rotary is doing this thru our co-sponsored student at Agnes Scott College from Columbia, South America; to our support of community programs, and local schools; to our international service work in conjunction with Leadership DeKalb in Costa Rica; to our participation in a Rotarian group from our District going to India in the fall to participate in a Polio eradication project. The program and activities which we participate in represent the area of outreach which our members choose to support. If you would like to know more about us or Rotary, in general, please contact myself or any of our officers. To receive copies of our Bulletin, please notify us and we will be happy to put you on our distribution list. |
